Steve Craig

As a conference producer working and living in London my life is far removed from the people I will be reaching out to in Costa Rica. I’ve worked at Informa for over a year now and feel honoured to be given such a great opportunity. Building houses and seeing physically how much difference can be made to peoples’ lives and their living conditions will really underline a sense of achievement, and create a humbling yet rewarding experience.

I’m motivated by people and hope that my personable nature will be important in building relationships with the local Costa Rican community, as well as with fellow volunteers. Although the main priority for this trip will be about the people we are helping, it is nevertheless important that Informa is recognised for the fantastic opportunity it is giving its staff. Therefore my copy writing skills will hopefully be valuable in communicating the importance of this opportunity for local communities to staff considering applying for future projects, and indeed for anyone interested.

The project we are undertaking will mean a lot to the people we are helping, and I intend to work hard over the two weeks, both physically and sociably, to ensure that the projects we are given are completed to the highest standard.

End Goal

I hope that the two weeks spent in Costa Rica will have a positive effect on the local community, on fellow volunteers and on myself. I want to return to Telephone House having felt that I’ve learned something from the people I’ve met (their passions, interests and challenges), and in return that they’ve learned something from me (Makiato Cafe). I will thrive on the chance to play a pivotal role in the improvement of other’s lives, and to leave safe in the knowledge that I really have made a permanent and positive contribution.

What can I do to achieve this goal?

I will promote the utmost enthusiasm from the outset across all fronts – the building of houses, meeting and staying with local families, and working together with fellow volunteers. I hope the life skills I have acquired to date will be of great benefit to others, and in turn hope that their own lives and positive interaction will benefit me.
