Louise Canfield

I’ve worked at Informa for 4 years now in marketing and circulation, I currently work centrally for IBI and, with Savinder Degun, we look after Health Insurance, Banking Technology, The Review and help out on a few other titles. I’ve always worked in publishing and prior to Informa I worked for Sweet & Maxwell, Quantum Business Media, and IPC Media in marketing and editorial roles. I have never done any sort of manual work, in fact, the most physically demanding job I’ve ever had was a paper round, so this should be interesting!

I’ve wanted to some voluntary work overseas for years and this is such a fantastic opportunity for many reasons; to meet new people, to travel, to learn all about a new culture, to improve my Spanish speaking skills and to do something really worthwhile.

End goal

I have several goals that I’d like to achieve from this experience. Firstly I am looking forward to working on a sought after property and being able to see the fruits of our labours at the end of the two weeks. I think living with a family will be a great way to get to learn the culture and gain an understanding of life in Costa Rica. And I’d love to be completely fluent in Spanish when I return! That’s not at all realistic, but you’ve got to have goals…!

What can I do to achieve this goal?

Well I don’t have any house building skills as such but I’m not shy of hard work and I can’t wait to get out there and give it a go. I’ve been learning Spanish for a couple of years as well, so I’m hoping to really get the chance to use it and improve my speaking and listening skills.
